Antique Castelli d’Abruzzo Majolica Table Lamp – ca. 1900

Hand-painted Italian faience – Biblical scene with Moses

Rare and finely hand-painted majolica table lamp from Castelli d’Abruzzo, Italy, dating to around 1900. This richly decorated ceramic base features two narrative scenes from the life of Moses, a classic biblical subject often depicted in the majolica tradition of Castelli.

One side shows Moses with a staff, dressed in flowing robes, standing in an exotic landscape of palms, rocks, and water — possibly referencing the Crossing of the Red Sea or his prophetic mission. The reverse shows a second figure carrying firewood, likely representing Moses in his earlier life as a shepherd, before his divine calling. Together, the scenes reflect the spiritual journey of Moses from humble beginnings to chosen prophet.

The artwork is entirely hand-painted in vibrant glazes with great attention to detail. The ceramic body is mounted on a finely cast gilt brass base and collar in Art Nouveau style. A highly decorative and meaningful piece.

In good condition, the lampshade shows signs of wear and tear
